"それまでは昔、パン職人だった方が夜中の２時に「パンを焼き始めないと朝に間に合わない！」などと言いだすと、一生懸命「あなたはもうパン屋じゃないんですよ、ここは老人ホームなんですよ」などと説明して懸命に止めたそうですが、今ではキッチンに連れていき、好きにさせるそうです。すると５分もしないうちになんでキッチンにいるのかも忘れてしまい、すんなりとベットに戻せるそうです。

このようなやり方に「残酷だ」などという声もあるそうですが、自分がボケていることを認識せざる得ないような力ずくで規則に従わせるようなアプローチと、その瞬間は「昔」という現実を生きている老人にある程度好きにさせるのとどちらが残酷なんでしょうか？どんなに本当の「今」の現実を教えても、そのこと自体また忘れてしまうのであれば、自分が生き生きとしていた「昔」の現実を生きてもらうほうが、その本人の尊厳を尊重しているように私には思えます。"
